Being thankful, Day #24

My first introduction to the Tolkien-like elves was when i was in High School.  I was a new kid, but got invited to play Dungeons and Dragons.  The first time i played i had never even heard of an Elf or a Dwarf, let alone Lord of the Rings.  As a matter a fact, i was just a social oddity and not the proud geek writing before you today.

My first impression was one of mystery.  Dwarves came across as gruff, grumpy, and loved Beer - no, nope.  Gnomes, please.  Halflings, well, they seemed small, timid.  Orcs (well, players could play a half-breed version), were uncouth, rude, and barbaric. Elves on the other hand came across as elegant, sleek, stealthy.  My new friends tolerated the tons of questions i threw at them.  Eventually the 'threw' Tolkien back at me and encouraged me to read it.  Being my slothful self, i didn't (not yet anyway).  I continued to ask questions about them, etc.  Then as my interests drifted to other games, etc. i tried other slants, other races, but with only a few exceptions, i found myself always coming back to play elves.

Since then, i have continued to read about various 'incarnations' of Elves - almost exclusively of the Tolkien-like variety.  Fairies and sprites type 'elves' interest me very little.  I am thankful for elves because of their longevity, their apparent immortality, their love of music and desire to study whatever catches their fancy with complete focus, and when they have learned all they desire on that subject they look for something else.  And i like their desire to be a peaceful race (in general), but if it comes to it, they are capable of defending themselves and their friends admirably.

All of this is fantasy of course, but just like most of the heroes of old, they are but legend, flights of fancy.  I am thankful that Elves lift my thoughts above the drudgery of the mundane and give me something to aspire to, if nothing more than an in a general sort of way because, obviously, i will ever yet be human.

Saying "so long"

Today is the last day for my boss/supervisor, where i currently work. He has almost 20 years with our current company and has decided to not take the offer of the incoming company for our contract. I understand why, but i am not happy about his leaving. These things are facts of life. I have been very grateful for him as he 'saved' me from a bad job situation. When i came off of active duty in 2003 my employer informed me that i would be moved to the swing shift. When i told my then boss that was not really a good thing for me i was told i had 30 days to find another position/job or i would be moved. I told them that i had just spent a year away from my kids and that this would ensure i would only get to see them on the weekends. They response, "we have kids too". *sigh* Well, i was really bummed when my current boss "happened" upon my cube. He was looking for the one of the PC guys to set up his "new" laptop (he was being brought off of being laid off for the contract we are currently on). We got to talking and he encouraged me to apply for one of the seven positions he had coming open. Although in the end i took a 20% hit in my wallet (10% for the loss of the shift differential i would have had, and a 10% base pay cut) i have never regretted it. I now work a little over 8 miles from home, and more importantly i am home in the evenings with my family. I don't handle change very well, and i am not handling this well. He will be missed. I have mentioned before that four times a year i become a tennis widower for two weeks. Well yesterday my beloved was trying to watch some tennis. At four different times during the day she turned on the tennis coverage (both on ESPN and the Tennis channel), and each time they were either showing live, or a replay of, Serena Williams' match where she was eliminated by Svetlana Kuznetsova. I know she is the last American in the SLAM event, and i know she is #2 in the world, but there were some other matches that really good that we wanted to watch too! I mean come on! Every time matches were shown, literally all day yesterday, the only match we were able to watch was the Serena match. Today was the third day of getting back to the gym after taking the last 6 months off. Basically i was too lazy to get back. Well, i am paying the price for it now. My knees were killing me after from before when i would run as part of the regimen, so i asked them to take the running off and replace it with the elliptical. Now, i don't know who invented that particular torture device but it is a killer. I only use it for 10 minutes at a time, maintaining 110 rpm for the time. When i am done my legs feel like jello, but overall i like it. I miss running though. I am one of the few people that actually enjoy it. My dad got me hooked on it when i was really young. We lived in Brooklyn at the time and he was having to get himself healthy so he took the whole family on early morning runs in Prospect Park. Although i gave him a hard time about getting up early and running i think it planted a seed for me later in life. He eventually left me, my brother and step-mother at home and kept it up for a long time. When i was in high School i decided to go out for Cross Country... the first day the coach took us on a 12 mile job, then to the track for 8 sets of wind sprints (another 2 miles where you sprint the straight aways and jog the corners on a quarter mile track typically around the football field), then we did 8 sets of "hills" (a fairly steep hill beside the school about 100 yards long. I nearly died... but i was back out there the next day and stayed with it - right up until the team went to the state championships where i dropped out of the team (a theme of my life). When i am in shape (and about 20 to 30 pounds lighter) i love to just get up and go out running. If you ever seen the movie with Mel Gibson, "What Women Want", the scene where they pitch the ad campaign for women's Nike... the thoughts on what it's like to be out running is pretty much it... well, except from a masculine point of view of course. 8) Recently i found out that the author of a blog i frequent (Semper Reformunda) plays a tabletop game called Battletech. Man that took me back. I love that game. I found out he plays with some others at his church some Sunday nights. I would love to meet up with him and play a game or two some time. My all time favorite Mech was the Warhammer (pictured left). In game terms it's not really all that great. Prone to over heating, and poor short range options, but it has good armor and has a great look. Unfortunately the original producers of the game took some license with some images from the Japanese Manga - Robotech and lost a lawsuit and use of the images. Several computer and console games have been spawned from this game series, but i never got into the those games because i've never really been that good at hand-eye coordination games. Anyway... enough rambling for today...

Eight things about me

Ok, yesterday I found out that I was "tagged" so here it goes: The rules: Each player lists 8 facts or habits about themselves; the rules of the game are to be posted first; at the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and goes to their blogs to leave a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged. 1) I believe that things like solar energy and geothermal technology for the home owner is an excellent idea. But right now the tech is generally out of reach for most Americans, and that is a shame. 2) I tend to speak very literally. I do not like to use "absolutes" when I talk. Even on things I am pretty confident about I will always leave room for the unknown. 3) When I was younger I lived for a brief time with a family that collected old beer cans. They went on outings to look for them and then brought them home to carefully restore them. It was an impressive collection, but I grew up hating beer so... I started collecting soda cans. Before I lost it (long story) I hade over a hundered and twenty different cans. 4) The only 'fight' I am glad I lost with my younder brother was over a woman. I was young and didn't see the signs. In the end she cheated on me while I was away in basic training with my own brother. They got married (which I did not go to the ceremony), had two beautiful daughters, and eventually got divorced. She took him for everything - three houses, two cars, and all the property. My brother ended up with his pickup truck and no cash. 5) I have a hard time with book learning. Subjects like English and History are very hard for me. But Math I can get into. There are things for me to do, problems to solve. History and English require me to read and remember. But I do find that when I take notes I often do not have to go back and review them. My memory and learning seemed very much tied into my hands. :) 6) It drives me nuts when things are left open. Cabinets, closets, drawers. I will open and close the same door three dozen times while working on something if I have to. I will often call my children down stairs from where ever they are, from what ever they are doing, just to close a door they left open. I'm probably scaring them for life. 7) I LOVE praise & worship music. Especially if I am able to really get 'alone' to focus on the words and on my Savior. It draws my mind into the wonders of all that God is. I especially love the songs that draw the attention away from myself and point towards Him.
Jesus, Lover Of My Soul (It's All About You) It's all about You, Jesus And all this is for You For Your glory and Your fame It's not about me As if You should do things my way You alone are God and I surrender To Your ways
8) I have, for all intents and purposes, lived on my own since I was 16. Granted, in the early years I was supported by a vary caring friend fo the family, but I was expected to pay rent, etc. Which I did not always do. After living in seven differnt houses/apartments, and attending three different schools in the 9th grade I had had enough. The next time my mother moved I told her I was staying where I was when she upped an moved again. (And that was after moving twice more in the 10th grade).
Well, I had to search my brain and come up with eight things I was pretty sure I had not blogged about before. LOL I am also having trouble coming up with eight people to tag. I will see who has not already been tagged and edit this post and let them know as well. :)
Verse for today:
God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, [1] but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them. I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’”

Yikes! I've been tagged!

Well, "Big Mama" has tagged me to post Eight things about myself. I am a little short on time so I will sort of work on it on the side and post it tomorrow. Not much new here. I've been gathering information to try and make sure I have all my ducks in a row for when I decide to retire from the National Guard. For my part, when the time comes, I really only have two obligations. One is to put my request to retire in written form. The other is to make sure I attend a briefing that outlines all the options and things that need to take place to retire. Ok, the latter is actually a unit obligation, but I think this is one I should really make sure of myself. ;-) Last night my beloved and I had a last minute BBQ. Nothing fancy, just us and the two other families that went with her to pick cherries. We threw hot dogs and burgers on the grill, cleaned off a few carrots, and brought out the bags of chips and that was it. The best part about it was staying up way too late to talk with some freinds who we rarely get to hang out with. One family (the one that stayed way too late) is heavily involved with Young Life and attend the same church we do. We got into some really good discussions about what we like, and what we would prefer to see, in 'church'. We are not out to change the world, or even undermine what is going on in our local church, we just believe there are things that could go better. Something I need to pray more on - and maybe step forward in some fashion. The other family have been good friends since my beloved was in College, and they have taken the lead to start a new caregroup (home group, biblical community, small group, whatever term you might use - you get the idea). We are planning on rotating between their house (only four doors down) and ours. We shall see. Well, that is all I have, and I've been rambling on for too long as it is... Verse for today:
Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
